this blog is moving!

While I’ve had a great time posting here on WordPress, it just doesn’t cater to my specific needs the way Blogger can. So if you enjoy my content I posted here, please follow me to my new blog! Do While(Geek)

Weighted Companion Cube dice 2.0

So I finally got around to revising the Weighted Companion Cube dice. The one side now has a heart, instead of a one pip.
You can buy a real one right now at, Shapeways.com

3D printing at home, not so Star Trek.

That’s right, very soon homes could have desktop 3d printers to print out whatever the user desired. One of the larger open source 3d printing projects out there, Reprap(short for “replicating rapid prototyper”) can make objects up to 20cm^3 is size in a variety of materials, including plastic and food. Also, as previously mentioned, the project is open source, so you only have to pay for the materials to build the machine, making it about the cost of a conventional laser printer when they were new. For more information on the project check out the video below.

Raytraced Minecraft wallpaper

I recently found a way to export Minecraft worlds as an obj file. So I imported it into Blender and used the Cycles render engine. This is 10,000 samples, it took a day and a half or so. Heres the link to download the 1080p version for a sweet wallpaper!

Triforce dice anyone?

Inspiration has struck me again in the dice department, this time a whole set. Its another reference to video game culture, can you spot it?

Triforce 6 piece set

So This project took significant more time than the Weighted Companion cube dice did. But hey, there’s 6 times as many dice, give me a break. I haven’t ordered a set of these yet from shapeways, but I took the liberty of posting them up for the rest of you guys. :P In other news I’m onto something big in the 3d printing department, stay tuned..

Printing a model of dice in three dimensions.

So a while back I was sitting at the dinner table/dnd congregation zone and I was playing with my dice when I thought of something. Weighted Companion Cube dice. I know, it sounds epic, thats what the dudes around the table said as well. I had already found a company that prints your 3d files in three dimensions in many materials, Shapeways. So the only thing left to was actually model this behemoth of a video game icon. And heres what I came up with:

companion cube dice

It took quite a few hours to model it… and then another hour figuring out how Blender’s scaling worked with the real world before printing it. I just ordered a pair and they should be here soon! I put them up so anyone who wants a pair can have at it, heres the link. I’m totally excited about making my 3d models a reality though, I’ll be sure to look into this stuff more and report back to you guys.

Oops, my finger slipped!

Don’t look, your not supposed to see this yet ;D

Oh, Hello UDK Mobile!

Sorry for not posting lately guys, I don’t even have a good excuse for ignoring the blog other than life happening. But enough of that, on to my actual post.

I was interested in the Unreal Development Kit back when it first came out back in the end of 2009, but I never really got anywhere with it without a solid idea or skills. Since then I’d say I’ve accumulated a lot of new-found skill in programing and 3d artistry. So when I recently read that the UDK now has mobile iOS support I was a little extremely excited. Now this revelation was made clear to me a couple weeks ago, and since then a few ideas of how I could implement this powerful tool have popped into my head. So, I’m just letting you guys now because turns out I’m working on a proof of concept demo at the moment so stay tuned for more information soon. XD

Tutorial: Flickering light animation

Lately I’ve been fooling around with F-curve editor in blender, mostly with the modifiers, they’re so useful!

So the tutorial I want to show you today will yield results on all lamps like this.

Do cube in a new light.

After unintentionally being sucked in to a ‘demoreel marathon’ on Youtube I was inspired to play around with blenders lighting. Like most Blender noobs I too was confused by how everything, no matter how you tampered with the material the subject still looked a bit gray. Well, after seeing some kickass stuff on those demoreels I was tempted to create a believe-able fake sunlight scene, and here is the result.

Do cube

I used my favourite subject, the Do cube, not only because it looks amazing like this, but also because I dont have many pretty things yet. 0.o

Anywho I fell in love with this render and with any luck, it will be the blogs new BG for a while, until I craft something better. :)
